Syracuse University Career Services supports yearly career staff professional development and community building

Engaging in yearly ‘Career Services SUmmits’ allows Syracuse University career staff to refresh, engage and empower themselves to better serve student career development

Syracuse University Career Services (Central) provides support to both career development staff and full-time undergraduates students across campus. In support of our Vision and Mission, we began providing summer opportunities for professional development and community building in 2022 for all team members associated with a career services department on campus. This amounts to 11 school or college departments and 5 unit departments with over 75+ related staff at any given time. Learn more about career centers on our Find Your Career Center webpage.

2024

This year we wanted to focus more on celebrating the work the career services network has been able to accomplish and build community.

With a goal of offering a staff experience completely different from years past, our team was able to host an afternoon at Onondaga Lake Park.

Through collaborative conversations of the Central team and leading support from our former administrative specialist, Isabella Csemez, and current employer relations specialist, Lindsay Mason, we were able to provide delicious food and beverage for over 65+ staff and their guests.

In years past we have offered career services staff opportunity to engage in:

2023

  • Peer professional career development and skills sharing
  • Learning from external industry leaders such as Christian Garcia, Associate Dean and Executive Director of Toppel Career Center at University of Miami and Kevin Monahan, Sr. Associate Dean of Student Affairs for Career and Professional Development at Carnegie Mellon University.
  • Learning from internal leadership such as Mary Grace Almandrez, Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion
  • Community building based on work focus for groups such as Employer Relations, Data Specialists, Career Advisors and leadership.
  • Intention setting for focus areas and periodic community check-ins and information sharing.

2022

  • Career systems training and engagement for staff up-skilling in regard to Big Interview, Firsthand, GoinGlobal, Handshake, LinkedIn Learning and VMock where there was an average increase of 16 percentage points in usage confidence post-SUmmit.
  • Career staff community building and information sharing
