ALERTING YOUR REFERENCES

Submitted an application or asked to interview? Make sure to let your references know to expect a call or email. Throughout the process, keep your references up to date with what has happened so far. For example,

  • The position description
  • An employer profile
  • The name(s) of anyone to whom you have already spoken
  • What was discussed relative to the specific reference person and their connection to you.

When you finished your interview by asking about next steps in the process, you should offer to connect the employer with references and learn when and how that might happen.  All this will help your references to be more personal and position-specific in any communications they have with the employer.

If you have network contacts who work with the employer, you probably will want to alert them to an application or interview on the chance that they might put in a good word for you.
