MEET THE STAFF
Mike provides overall direction and support for all office services and functions and creates opportunities to connect and collaborate with all internal and external constituents. He has been a member of the staff since 1987 as a career counselor, associate director and has served as director since 2001. Mike received his master’s degree in counseling from Syracuse University and his B.A. in psychology and sociology from Binghamton University. He also currently teaches the career counseling class in the Counseling and Human Services Department at Syracuse University. Mike enjoys woodworking and is very active in a variety of sports.
Associate Director, Employer Relations
Susan manages the recruiting and employer relations operations and coordinates the connections between the external and internal constituents for Career Services. She is eager to enhance employment and internship opportunities for all Syracuse University students and to welcome new employers and agencies to campus. She joined Career Services in 2015 after previous experience as an Executive Recruiter and Internship Placement Coordinator, in addition to previous work in the healthcare, agriculture, and hospitality industries. Susan has a MA in Marriage and Family Therapy from Syracuse University and a MPS and BS in Hospitality Management from Cornell University. In her spare time, Susan enjoys entertaining, gardening, spiritual pursuits, and traveling with her daughter.
Christina advises students on career-related topics such as major and career exploration as well as job and internship search strategies. Christina graduated Magna Cum Laude from Ithaca College in 2012 with a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology and a minor in French. As an undergraduate, she worked for the Ithaca College Career Services, Study Abroad, and Residence Life offices. She is now pursuing a Master of Science in Student Affairs Counseling at SU. Christina enjoys experimenting with cooking and is always planning travel adventures even if they can’t always happen.
Seydem has been working with the Career Services as a graduate assistant since the spring of 2014. She is a third-year PhD student in Counseling and Counselor Education and is interested in art therapy and supervision. She graduated from Bogazici University in Istanbul, Turkey with a BS in Psychological Counseling and an MS in Mental Health Counseling from the University of Rochester. Seydem's interests are painting, swimming and reading.
Office Assistant II and Receptionist
As you enter Career Services, Carol is the first person to welcome you to the office. Her primary duty is to inquire as to how she can help you and then guide you to the services provided by our staff and office resources. If your desire is to talk with a Career Counselor, Carol would be happy to schedule a meeting for you in their calendar. Having been a customer service manager for over 15 years, Carol has a passion for connecting people with ways to achieve their goals. She has received an AAS in Executive Secretarial Services and an AAS in Data Processing from Onondaga Community College as well as her Human Resource Generalist Certificate from Syracuse University.
Performing & Creative Careers Advocate
Sam focuses on initiatives and advising services that support the career development of students and alumni in the performing and creative arts. Sam previously served as Careers Coordinator and Advisor at the Eastman School of Music and is experienced counseling those pursuing their creative paths, as well as those seeking to teach or administer in their creative fields. Sam is an advocate for entrepreneurship in the arts, and hopes to continue to guide students through their development of new ventures and new career possibilities. Outside Career Services, Sam maintains an active performance schedule, having earned dual degrees in classical guitar and vocal performance at the Eastman School of Music.
Dan Olson-Bang, Ph.D.
Associate Director, Graduate Career Services
Dan is responsible for creating programming to benefit Masters and Ph.D. students, such as Just for Masters, Ph.D. Perspectives, First-Generation Ph.D. Luncheons, and a wide number of other events for grad students at every level. Dan spends a great deal of time helping doctoral students to find tenure-track positions, and he is particularly interested in helping those students who wish to find jobs beyond the tenure-track, such as university administration, industry, and non-profits. He completed his PhD. in English Literature from Fordham University in spring 2015, where he taught a variety of courses at the undergraduate level and served as an Academic Counselor. A new transplant from New York City to Syracuse, Dan enjoys riding and repairing bikes, hiking in the woods around Syracuse, and learning more about the snowy place where he landed.
Jennifer Renee Pluta
Assistant Director, Veteran Career Services
Jennifer focuses on the career development and employment needs of the veteran and military family community at Syracuse University. She is also a Master Sergeant in the U.S. Army Reserve, serving as a Quality Assurance Manager for the 1st Battalion, Army Reserve Careers Division, and is a veteran having served in Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation Enduring Freedom. She possesses a thorough understanding of the unique needs of veterans specifically in career transition, and the ability to work collaboratively across the University, as well as leverage existing services to achieve end goals. In her spare time, Jennifer enjoys spending time with her family, binge watching, fitness and new experiences.
Chuck guides hundreds of students and alumni per year on issues from both initial and continuing career exploration to gaining experience and perspectives on specific careers to executing solid internship and job searches. He especially loves to help students dig up valuable information and use it profitably in networking, cover letter writing and interviewing. A former recruiter and outplacement consultant, he enjoys using coaching and role playing to improve students’ interviewing skills. He is also Career Services’ primary liaison to the community of students with disabilities. He holds the Global Career Development Facilitator (GCDF) certification and has a Masters in Library Science and a BA in History. He is an avid basketball fan, golfer, and blues music lover.
Lucy A. Rodgers
Lucy facilitates students in locating internships in their fields of interest and bridging their skill sets with local businesses. She is also responsible for updating the database of employers who offer internships to students from Syracuse University. Lucy was born in Italy, raised in Central New York and received her Bachelor of Arts degree from LeMoyne College. She has sales and business experience prior to joining the Syracuse University community. In her free time, Lucy enjoys traveling with her family, shopping, baking, and decorating.
Assistant Director, Counseling
Tracy guides students and alumni through everything from assessing their skills, values, and interests, to an internship or job search, to connecting with others on LinkedIn. In addition, Tracy is a Certified True Colors Trainer and enjoys discussing colors and personality with others. A Syracuse native, Tracy received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from SUNY Geneseo and a Master of Science in Adult Education from SUNY Buffalo State. She joined Career Services in 2011 after working as a recruiter for over four years. When she's not working with students you can often find Tracy working out, cheering for the Orange or planning her next adventure, big or small. Assistant Director, Alumni Programs
Jenna manages alumni engagement for career programs, events, and services dedicated to assisting alumni. She will also promote and market strong, collaborative, cross-campus partnerships to grow the group of alumni who serve as career resources for students, as well as expand current efforts to engage alumni through social media. Jenna earned her MA in Educational Leadership for Student Affairs and BS in Psychology both from Central Michigan University (CMU) and she is a Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) Certified Practitioner. She came to SU in 2015 and started working with the Veterans Career Transition Program (VCTP) though the Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF). Her passion for career development and networking brought her back to her roots with this role in Career Services. Jenna lives in the Syracuse area and has become a huge Orange fan! Assistant Director, Budget & Technology
Katie is responsible for budget administration, payroll and all personnel transactions, web updates, OrangeLink, and providing technical support to Careeer Services staff members. Previously, Katie worked in the medical benefits and marketing research fields. Katie received her Bachelor of Science in Marketing from Oswego State University. Katie likes to rock out to the Flaming Lips and Built to Spill.
